NEW YORK, August 14, 2006 — The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced the Closing Night, Centerpiece and Special Retrospective of this year’s 44th Annual New York Film Festival, to take place September 29-October 15 at Lincoln Center. They are, Guillermo del Toro’s folkloric Pan’s Labyrinth (Closing Night), Pedro Almodóvar’s 2006 Cannes International Film Festival award-winning Volver (Centerpiece) and a special 25th anniversary presentation of Warren Beatty’s Academy Award®-winning Bolshevik Revolution epic Reds, screening in a newly restored print.
Del Toro’s sixth and most ambitious film, Pan’s Labyrinth is a gothic fairy tale set against the postwar repression of Franco’s Spain. The film centers on Ofelia, a lonely and dreamy child living with her mother and adoptive father, a military officer tasked with ridding the area of rebels. In her loneliness, Ofelia creates a world filled with fantastical creatures and secret destinies. With post-war repression at its height, Ofelia must come to terms with her world through a fable of her own creation. "With Pan’s Labyrinth Guillermo del Toro has created a haunting tale that deftly combines the director's penchant for the fantastic with a rich historical vision," says Richard Peña, program director of the Film Society and chairman of the New York Film Festival selection committee. The film premiered at the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival and will be released in the U.S. by Picturehouse Films. It was written by Del Toro, produced by Alfonso Cuarón, Del Toro and Frida Torresblanco, and stars Maribel Verdú, Sergi López, Ivana Baquero and Doug Jones.
Volver is a meeting of Mildred Pierce and Arsenic and Old Lace, combined with the surrealistic naturalism of Almodóvar's fourth film, What Have I Done to Deserve This? / Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto!! At the heart of Madrid’s lively working-class neighborhoods—where immigrants from various Spanish provinces share dreams, lives and fortune with a multitude of ethnic groups and other races—three generations of women survive wind, fire and even death, thanks to goodness, audacity and a limitless vitality. At the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival, Volver was honored with a Best Screenplay award for Almodóvar and an unprecedented Best Actress award for the film’s ensemble female cast: Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Blanca Portillo, Yohanna Cobo and Chus Lampreare. "Volver represents yet another highpoint for a director whose artistry seems to know no limits," says Peña. The film, which will be released in the U.S. by Sony Pictures Classics, was written by Almodóvar and produced by Esther García.
Reds is a masterful political and historical epic that mesmerized critics and audiences alike with its depiction of the love story between activists John Reed (Beatty) and Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton) set against the backdrop of the outbreak of World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution. "Reds was a milestone in the American cinema of its era, and we're delighted to help a new generation of filmgoers discover this important work," says Peña. Written, directed, produced by and starring Warren Beatty, Reds garnered 12 Academy Award® nominations in 1982—more than any film in the previous 15 years—and won three, including Best Director for Beatty, who also took home every other major directorial award that season. The film boasts an incredible supporting cast including Jack Nicholson as playwright Eugene O’Neill, Gene Hackman, Paul Sorvino and Maureen Stapleton, who received an Academy Award® for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance. The film will be screening courtesy of Paramount Home Video Entertainment.
The 17-day festival, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, is a highly selective showcase of new, inspiring and provocative cinema by both emerging talent and recognized international artists. Stephen Frears’ acidly funny portrait of the British royal family, The Queen, starring Helen Mirren, is the Opening Night presentation (Miramax Films).
